Former President Bill Clinton says he had an affair with Monica Lewinsky to help “manage my anxieties,” according to the Daily Mail.
His comments come in the new four-part documentary series, “Hillary,” the newspaper reported. It is set to air on Hulu on Friday.
The former president said he was trying to cope with the pressure of being commander in chief.
“You feel like you're staggering around, you've been in a 15 round prize fight that was extended to 30 rounds and here's something that will take your mind off it for a while, that's what happens,” he said.
Clinton reportedly offers an apology to Lewinsky in the documentary. He said he felt “terrible” her life was defined by their relationship.
And Hillary Clinton discloses in the documentary that she and her husband underwent “painful” marriage counseling after news of his affair with Lewinsky went public.
He had finally admitted his relationship with Lewinsky to her after having first denied it.
'I went and sat on the bed and talked to her,” he said. “I told her exactly what happened, when it happened. I said I feel terrible about it. We've been through quite a bit in the last few years. I said I have no defense, it's inexcusable what I did.”
The Hill noted that the comments are some of the most personal he had made about his affair since leaving office.
