An MSNBC host is calling the parents of some Kansas high school students "lame" for signing a petition to stop Michelle Obama from delivering a speech at their graduation next month.
During Monday's "Morning Joe" broadcast, host Joe Scarborough brought up the story out of Topeka, Kan. His co-host Mika Brzezinski responded, "Wow, that's lame."
The first lady's appearance on May 17 is tied to the 60th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, a landmark Supreme Court case in 1954 that ended legal segregation in public schools.
Several families complained about the planned speech, which would take place at an 8,000-seat arena in front of the graduating classes of five high schools. Some said the guest list would limit the number of seats for the graduates' families, while others said Obama's appearance would overshadow the students' big day.
"I have got to say, if you have the opportunity to have the first lady of the United States come out and speak at your high school graduation, keep those concerns to yourself,"
Scarborough said. "That is asinine."
"The symbolic value of having her there?" Brzezinski asked.
"And the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board? That is absolutely unbelievable," Scarborough said.
Brzezinski ended the conversation by saying, "Every step should be made to accommodate everybody."
