Michelle Obama surprised people who thought they were recording emotional farewells to the First Lady on "The Tonight Show."
One-by-one people were asked to face a portrait of Michelle and say what her years in the White House meant to them.
"Because of you, I know that my race does not define who I am, or what I can accomplish," one woman said.
As each person concluded their remarks, Michelle would walk out from behind a curtain and surprise them.
Often she was met with hugs and tears.
