Melania Trump appears to have found her voice in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The Washington Post noted the usually private first lady has recently taken to Twitter to praise those helping in the battle.
She wrote on Saturday: “We salute essential workers in the health care industry who are fighting to save lives. We thank those who put themselves at risk to keep our grocery stores, pharmacies & gas stations open. Those who ensure that our power plants & factories are up & running.”
And in a public service announcement she thanked “American senior citizens” for following guidelines to stay at home.
She has also released a video message of appreciation for medical personnel and other frontline responders.
The Post noted that in the past, the press-shy first lady has appeared uncomfortable with speaking engagements and rarely campaigned for her husband in 2016.
Now, on the same day the president declared he doesn’t want to wear a face mask, Melania Trump’s mask photos were posted, according to the newspaper.
“Between the two of them, she certainly is the person who is more sensitive to social graces,” said Katherine Jellison, a professor of history at Ohio University. “I think she’s an intelligent person and that she’s focused on getting a fact-based message out there consistently is probably a very good sign.”
