Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., over the weekend pulled over to check on a Black man who was pulled over by Los Angeles police, reports TMZ.
“They stopped a brother, so I stopped to see what they were doing,” Waters said in a video taken by a bystander and published to Facebook.
Waters, 81, said an officer told her she was parked illegally.
“They said I’m in the wrong place and they're going to give me a ticket,” she said in reference to her SUV parked near the intersection of South Vermont Ave. and West 108th St., inside her district.
“That's OK as long as I watch them,” she continued.
In the video, an observer told Waters, "You gotta do what you gotta do. Make sure" — and she responded, "I will.”
Waters has been outspoken following the death of George Floyd in police custody on May 25. Floyd, who was Black, was killed in police custody after Derek Chauvin, a white man, knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
Floyd’s death sparked protests and tributes in Minneapolis and across the country. All four officers involved were fired and now face criminal charges.
