Former astronaut Mark Kelly, a longtime gun control advocate, on Sunday said he was hopeful federal legislation could get a fresh look in the wake of the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, that reignited the national debate on gun control and spurred protests around the country.
“These young people seem quite motivated, and they realize that they have been dealt an incredibly difficult set of circumstances, have been put in a horrible position,“ Kelly told ABC's "This Week," adding, “They want to see change. So that’s why I think this could be different.”
Kelly founded the gun control advocacy group, Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, with his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords. His comments come a day after students delivered impassioned calls for Congress to pass stricter gun control measures at rallies around the country.
“I think you got to be quick," Kelly said about legislation. "I mean, you've got to get the legislation passed fast. ... I’m hopeful that if we could get Congress, get the House and Senate to pass some sensible legislation, we get it to his desk, I think there’s a pretty good chance he might sign it."
