Texas Executes Woman Who Starved Girlfriend's 9-Year-Old Son

A woman who, together with her girlfriend, starved a 9-year-old boy to death was executed Wednesday by Texas authorities, The Washington Post reported.

Lisa Coleman, 38, was sentenced to death in 2006 for murdering Davontae Williams, the son of her girlfriend Marcella Williams.

Coleman's conviction hinged on the charge that she had kidnapped the boy, which made the murder a capital offense. Her lawyer disputed only that any kidnapping was involved. The boy's mother plea bargained and received a sentence of life in prison, according to the Post.

The child was brutally beaten, bound, and starved, weighing 35 pounds at the time of his death. Texas child welfare authorities lost track of the family in 2002 after first investigating the boy's treatment in 1995 when he was an infant, the Star-Telegram reported.

Executions of female inmates are highly uncommon. Since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, just 14 other women have been put to death.

Women comprise 1 percent of the 1,389 executions carried out nationwide over the subsequent 38 years, the Post reported.

Coleman was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, in a procedure that took roughly 12 minutes. Her last words were, "I'm done," the Post reported.

Texas leads the United States in carrying out capital punishment. It has executed 516 inmates since 1976. Oklahoma and Virginia trail distantly with 111 and 110 executions, respectively.

Since 1976, 14 women have been executed, five on them in Texas, according to the Post.

Coleman's appellate attorney John Stickels said: "What she's really guilty of is being a black lesbian," the Star-Telegram reported.
