Report: Letterman Asks Brian Williams to Be One of His Final Guests

By    |   Monday, 20 April 2015 10:08 PM EDT

David Letterman has asked suspended "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams to be one of the last guests on his show next month, according to a report.

A Mediaite report summarizes the news, which Letterman revealed during the taping of Monday night's show.

Letterman is retiring from the Late Show on May 20, and the final week of his show is expected to be a star-studded affair.

Williams is in hot water after it was revealed he embellished details of stories on and off the air. He has been a frequent guest on Letterman's show, and during a 2013 appearance he talked about the helicopter he was riding in coming under fire during a trip to Iraq.

That story has come into question, with people who were with Williams saying the helicopter was not attacked.

There have since been other instances in which it appears Williams may have made up details to dramatize stories, and NBC suspended him for six months without pay in February.

Williams was slated to appear on Letterman's show after the controversy began earlier this year, but he canceled.

If Williams accepts Letterman's offer to appear as one of his final guests, the late-night comic's ratings would surely go up. The newsman has remained largely silent since his suspension.

Williams appeared in public for the first time a month ago, when he attended a fundraiser to save his former Catholic high school from closing. He spoke briefly about the school, according to the New York Daily News, but did not mention the scandal surrounding him in his remarks.

Letterman has also invited former rival Jay Leno to appear on his show during its final week next month, according to the New York Times' Dave Itzkoff, who is cited in the Mediaite piece.

A report last week claimed NBC executives are worried that Williams could sign on with another network if they decide to fire him over the scandal.
