As the campaign for President Donald Trump is quick to call newly selected vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris a "phony," records show the president and his daughter Ivanka donated thousands of dollars to the former California attorney general's re-election effort.
California campaign donation records show Trump gave money to the 2011 and 2014 attorney general campaigns for Harris. Trump first donated $5,000 in September 2011 and $1,000 in February 2013.
In June 2014, Ivanka, a White House senior advisor, donated $2,000 to the re-election campaign for Harris.
On July 29, Trump called Harris "a fine choice" if presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden had chosen her as a running mate.
"I think she'd be a fine choice, Kamala Harris," Trump told White House reporters July 29. "She'd be a fine choice."
Now that Harris' spot as a confirmed vice presidential candidate has been confirmed, some in Trump's campaign have taken swipes at her selection.
"Phony Kamala will abandon her own morals, as well as try to bury her record as a prosecutor, in order to appease the anti-police extremists controlling the Democrat Party," Trump campaign adviser Katrina Pierson said in a statement. "She is proof that Joe Biden is an empty shell being filled with the extreme agenda of the radicals on the left."
On Tuesday, a campaign ad aimed at Harris doubled down on the newly-minted vice presidential candidate as a "phony" who is a member of the "radical left."
Trump gave Harris a backhanded comment, sarcastically commending the California senator as the vice president pick.
"She was my No. 1 draft pick," Trump said during a press conference. "We'll see how she works out. She did very poorly in the primaries.
"So I was a little surprised that he [Biden picked her]."
