President Donald Trump, while touting a better-than-expected jobs report, called it a "great day" for George Floyd, who was killed in police custody.
He made his comments Friday during a news conference at the White House. The Washington Post reported that Trump said the greatest thing that can happen for race relations is a strong economy.
"Equal justice under the law must mean that every American receives equal treatment in every encounter with law enforcement, regardless of race, color gender, or creed," he said. "They have to receive fair treatment from law enforcement. We all saw what happened last week. We can't let that happen.
"Hopefully, George is looking down right now and saying this a great thing that's happening for our country. It's a great day for him. It's a great day for everybody. It's a great, great day in terms of equality. It's really what our Constitution requires and it's what our country is all about."
Floyd died while in police custody in Minneapolis. A video shows a police officer with his knee pressed against Floyd's neck as the victim gasped for air. Floyd was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. Four police officers are being held on criminal charges, including one who is charged with second-degree murder.
