The Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones were sued over claims he sexually assaulted an Oklahoma woman in 2009 and intimidated and threatened her to not report the attack to police. Jones called the suit a “shakedown.”

Jana Weckerly filed the complaint yesterday in Dallas County court claiming Jones attacked her, and that the Cowboys, instead of reporting the crime, conspired to cover it up. Jones and the National Football League football team coerced Weckerly into signing documents, causing her to fear for her life, according to the complaint.

Weckerly waited until now to file the suit because she was afraid, Thomas D. Bowers, her lawyer, said today in a phone interview. “It was little old me against a billionaire,” and under the circumstances the amount of time it took Weckerly to come forward is a “normal thing,” he said.

Levi McCathern, a lawyer for Jones, said in an e-mail that the allegations are false and that the lawsuit amounts to a “money grab.” Law enforcement was involved due to the seriousness of the accusations, McCathern said.

“This is nothing more than an attempt to embarrass and extort Jerry Jones,” according to the e-mail. “This is a shakedown by a lawyer who is a solo practitioner just trying to make a name for himself.  The alleged incidents would have been more than five years old.”

Jones is the general manager of the Cowboys franchise, which last month announced the construction of the team’s new headquarters in Frisco, Texas.
