Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions wants large corporations, who received billions of dollars in federal coronavirus relief funds, to return the money.
Sessions, who is running for his old Senate seat in Alabama, urged that companies with fewer than 100 employees be given priority to the funds from the federal program, according to AL.com.
The program, administered by the Small Business Administration, grants 1% interest loans that could be forgiven if workers are kept on the payroll for eight weeks.
“The whole purpose of the CARES Act is to prevent this historic shutdown from ending thousands of small businesses,” Sessions said. “Mom-and-pop stores have been shuttered by ‘stay at home’ orders, and big corporations are taking large sums meant for the little guy. Every one of them should return these loans immediately.”
Restaurant chains Shake Shack, Ruth’s Hospitality Group and Potbelly’s have previously announced they would return loans worth a combined $40 million under the program.
Sessions is facing a July 14 primary runoff against former Auburn University coach Tommy Tuberville. The winner will face Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., in November.
