As an anticipated candidate for the presidency in 2016, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush wants to navigate the country's future path, but when it comes to his diet he's gone caveman.
The New York Times reports that since December, Bush has shed some 30 pounds from his 6-foot-4-inch frame by adhering to the Paleo diet, a recent mania in the diet world that promotes eating foods likely consumed by our prehistoric ancestors such as meat, nuts and berries in lieu of fatty, processed ones.
He embarked on the Paleo plan at the suggestion of his svelte son, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, according to
Reuters.
On the calorie-laden campaign trail where politicians regularly visit diners and attend pancake breakfasts, Bush has carefully avoided starches and sweets, according to the Times, inconspicuously pushing forbidden foods like hash browns, bread and pasta to the side of his plate.
Almonds are his favorite go-to for a high protein snack, and salad with grilled chicken is his "monotonous go-to lunch."
At the same time, he's sweating off calories on a treadmill and swimming laps in a pool.
But like most dieters, temptation sometimes gives way to indulgence.
"Just last week at a 'politics and pies' event in New Hampshire, suddenly he was holding a plate with a slice of blueberry pie on it," Reuters reported. "To hell with the diet," he said as he dove in. "Where are the french fries?"
