House Republicans plan to mark Tax Day by going after the most unpopular government agency in the country: the IRS.
House Speaker John Boehner
listed the bills on his website Tuesday.
One of them, a "Taxpayer Bill of Rights," would provide citizens with "the right to quality service, the right to confidentiality, and the right to appeal and have their challenge be heard," Boehner said on his site.
Other bills would make targeting groups or individuals for political reasons a firing offense; provide impartial review when applications for tax-exempt status are denied; disallow use of private email for official IRS business; allow taxpayers to know the status of an investigation involving their personal information; stop indefinite delays of groups seeking tax-exempt status; and provide equal treatment of gifts to charitable organizations.
The bills have received bipartisan support, Rep. Peter Roskam, who authored some of the bills, said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's
"On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."
"So, on a bipartisan basis now, folks are saying this is too much, IRS," Roskam said. "You've got too much power and the American people are going to push back against you."
