Hurricane Sandy Victims Caught in Fatal NJ Motel Fire

By    |   Friday, 21 March 2014 02:35 PM EDT

Three people were killed in a fire Friday that broke out in a motel on the Jersey shore where a number of victims of Hurricane Sandy had been staying.

The fire was at the Mariner's Cove Motor Inn in Point Pleasant Beach and started shortly before 6 a.m. Friday, according to NBC News.

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato told reporters that the three people who died were males, but did not release their names or ages.

At least eight other people were injured and 10 are missing, but some may have fled to safety.

The hotel had a capacity of about 100 people and was believed to have been occupied by about 40 guests at the time, according to NBC News.

Joe Frystock of Brick Township told NBC that he was displaced by Hurricane Sandy and had been staying at the motel since December. He said some others staying at the motel were also Sandy victims.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
