A trio of hockey fans in Tampa, Florida, received a visit from police after a neighbor called emergency services about a possible domestic dispute, which turned out to be Lightning fans yelling at the TV for a player to “shoot.”
Four Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies interrupted Devon Garnett at his apartment during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals Wednesday evening after two guests he had invited over to watch the game implored Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman to “shoot, shoot,” the Tampa Bay Times reported.
“So they came to the door and thought there were guns in the house,” the 26-year-old Garnett said. “We’re like, ‘Nope, we’re just screaming for Steven Stamkos.’”
“(The police) completely understood and just laughed it off,” Garnett said. “But they thought it was serious because I was screaming ‘shoot!’ as in ‘Shoot the puck.’”
The unidentified neighbor told police dispatch he heard a couple yelling at each other with one saying: “I dare you to shoot,” the sheriff’s dispatch report read.
Tampa Bay led the Dallas Stars two-games-to-one in the best-of-seven series heading into Game 4 Friday night. Tampa Bay is seeking its second National Hockey League title and first since 2004, while Dallas also is seeking its second title and first since 1999.
The entire series is being played behind closed doors in Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada, due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
