A website is offering free ammunition to gun owners who take new shooters to gun ranges to teach them how to operate their weapons safely.
AmmoToGo.com will provide two boxes of 9-mm ammunition to each gun owner who can provide proof that they took a new shooter to a range and demonstrated how to safely operate their pistol.
The Houston-based site will offer 100,000 rounds of ammunition, covering 1,000 trips to shooting ranges, as part of its "Ammo Ambassadors Program." The effort is co-sponsored by Magtech Ammunition in Minnesota.
"We wanted to do what we could to not only help promote the Second Amendment but also make sure that new gun owners were fully aware of how their pistols functioned," said Brandon Black, the website's founder.
"We know that not everyone had a parent or other family member that introduced them to firearms early in life — and there's no reason the cost of a couple boxes of ammo should hold back anyone from sharing the joy of shooting."
The FBI performed a record 185,345 background checks for gun buyers on the day after Thanksgiving.
