Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is being called a hero after he and two associates helped save a man from a car accident on Thursday.
Giuliani told
The New York Post that he and colleagues Sal DeSalvo and Marc Mukasey were driving on FDR Drive from Newark Airport at about 8:45 a.m. when they saw the accident.
"Marc was half sleeping...we took the red-eye [from California]" Giuliani told the newspaper's "Page Six."
"I was half-sleeping. Sal was driving. He was wide awake when we heard a big noise and saw a car flipped half over on the east side wall before the Houston Street exit."
DeSalvo said Giuliani told him to pull over, and they called 911. DeSalvo told the driver to turn off his ignition and remove his seat belt, and Giuliani started directing traffic.
Meanwhile, DeSalvo got help from two passing joggers, who pushed the car toward the wall while he pulled the victim out.
Giuliani said the man was "shook up, but not seriously injured. [Then] 200 yards away, we saw a white car with a nice young lady who seemed to be crying — she had been hit by [the flipped car]. So we got her information and the police showed up. A lot of police.”
DeSalvo had mentioned Giuliani's name, and police called Giuliani's wife, who was mistakenly told that he was in the crash.
