The U.S. city with the most residents who say they are proud of their community is Des Moines, Iowa, according to a yearlong Gallup survey.
Residents around the country were asked to rate their city on a scale of 1 to 5 — with 5 being the best — on whether they agreed with the statement, "You are proud of the community or the area where you live."
The poll was part of the massive
Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey taken from Jan. 2 to Dec. 29, 2014 and questioned 176,702 adults.
Here are the top 10 cities with the most community pride. Most of the people who answered that question offered up a 4 or 5 in the survey:
- Des Moines, Iowa: 76.5 percent
- Greenville, South Carolina: 75.1 percent
- Asheville, North Carolina: 74.6 percent
- Provo, Utah: 74.4 percent
- Raleigh, North Carolina: 73.8 percent
- Bradenton, Florida: 71.8 percent
- Anchorage, Alaska: 71.6 percent
- Oxnard, California: 71.5 percent
- Omaha, Nebraska: 71.2 percent
- Chattanooga, Tennessee: 70.2 percent
On the other end of the scale, Scranton, Pennsylvania, leads the cities with the least amount of community pride, followed by Youngstown, Ohio; Stockton, California; Fresno, California; Toledo, Ohio; Bakersfield, California; New Haven, Connecticut; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Memphis, Tennessee.
New Orleans led the country with having the most recognition for volunteering in its community, the poll also found — which Gallup contends is likely the case due to the cleanup effort following Hurricane Katrina.
"Gallup and Healthways have previously found that Americans who have been recognized for giving back to their communities have higher well-being than those who have not," according to Gallup.
