Residents of Palm Beach County, Florida made headlines after video of a public comment session with the Board of County Commissioners showed them denouncing a mandatory mask order as “devil’s laws.”
A local CBS affiliate reports that one woman, Sylvia Ball, said that she’s “very sad to see the authorities stomping on our constitutional rights,” and that “They want to throw God's wonderful breathing system out the door. You’re all turning your backs on it.”
Another attendee named Christina Gomez added, “We will get together and do a citizen’s arrest on every single human being that goes against the freedom of choice” and that masks “literally [are] killing people ... and every one of you who are obeying the devil’s law are going to be arrested for crimes against humanity.”
Hundreds of Twitter users shared the video, many comparing the incident to “those wacky citizen town hall montages” on the NBC show “Parks and Recreation.”
“People aren’t exaggerating. This really does look like one of those wacky citizen town hall montages out of ‘Parks and Rec’. Absolutely wild,” tweeted one user.
“I didn’t realize just how realistic Parks and Rec was with how they portrayed town meetings,” added another.
“We had hoped the public could self-police and heed the mayor’s recommendations issued weeks ago but that isn’t happening,” County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay said after the board approved the order, according to the CBS affiliate. “As a result, our numbers are increasing at a concerning rate.”
