Licensed pharmacists in Florida will now be able to administer coronavirus tests, though not everyone in the general public will have access to them, Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a press conference Friday, reports The Miami Herald.

"If you're not symptomatic but you think you may have been exposed — maybe someone you know or maybe you were just in an environment and you figured out that there may have been an outbreak somewhere — we want those people to be able to go in and get tested," said DeSantis. "Because that is really going to help us identify how much this disease has spread in different areas.”

More than 1,000 people have died in Florida from COVID-19, and 30,533 have contracted the virus, though just 316,959 Floridians have been tested.

DeSantis, who said he had been collaborating with the state's surgeon general, will also expand testing for residents and staff in elder-care homes. The state is also considering home tests to expand testing even further and rapid tests employers could use on-site. DeSantis earlier this week announced that the state will double its testing capacity at hospitals and long-term care facilities through a partnership with Abbott Laboratories.

The governor hopes additional testing will help to safely reopen Florida when the time comes – some beaches in the state have reopened, though DeSantis on Friday said an official date to reopen the state has not been decided on. His initial stay-at-home order is set to expire on April 30.

"With this direction, it's my hope that pharmacies throughout the state consider how to offer COVID-19 testing," DeSantis said. "The state of Florida stands ready to help."
