All residents and staff of Fisher Island, the richest zip code in the country, will be able to receive a coronavirus antibody test if they want one.
The Miami Herald reported the private island, located off the coast of Miami, spent $30,600 to purchase 1,800 blood tests that cost $17 each from the University of Miami Health System.
The antibody test determines if someone has been exposed to COVID-19 and developed antibodies to the infection. It delivers results in about 10 minutes. Tests will be available to the 800 families who live on the members-only island and the 400 staff members who work there.
"This is what the Fisher Island residents wanted," UHealth spokeswoman Lisa Worley told the Herald.
Half of Fisher Island residents are over age 60 and at high risk, Sissy DeMaria Koehne, a spokesperson for the island, said in a statement to Business Insider.
Testing is already underway. A real estate agent who lives on the island told Business Insider she has already been tested.
“It's just a finger prick," Elena Bluntzer told Business Insider. "You go and make an appointment along with everybody else and it's set up in such a way that there is a lot of social distancing.”
The island, only accessible by boat, closed many of its amenities including its beach club, restaurants, golf course, spa and tennis courts.
The cost of the tests nearly totals what members pay in annual dues to live on the exclusive island, according to Business Insider. The average income of residents is $2.2 million. Members pay $22,256 to live there on top of an initial $250,000 fee and the cost of a home. Units in the luxury condominium buildings start at $2 million and can cost as much as $40 million.
