Frank Luntz: Obama Risks Alienating Public Over Immigration

By    |   Thursday, 13 November 2014 06:17 PM EST

President Barack Obama, already with an approval rating floating around 40 percent, risks dropping even further if he signs an executive order giving 5 million illegal immigrants legal status, says pollster Frank Luntz.

The public supports Republicans on immigration by about 10 points, Luntz said Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."

"I'm not convinced that either side has a slam-dunk case on this. But … the president, by being so declarative, I think he's jeopardizing his credibility," Luntz said.

He added that some Democrats have told him they oppose what Obama is doing and fear he may be dividing the party right when they need to be repairing themselves for the 2016 elections.

"There is peril on both sides on this," he said.
