Seventy-three percent of voters say the United States will be fundamentally changed for the worse if the wrong candidate is elected president, according to a Washington Examiner/YouGov poll released Tuesday.
This feeling is almost equal among Democrats (79%) and Republicans (78%), but even 57% of Independents agree with the sentiment.
The pessimistic outlook appears to have been influenced by the emphasis both candidates put during the campaign on the result of the election affecting the character of the nation.
Democrat nominee Joe Biden stressed "What is on the ballot here is the character of this country. Decency. Honor. Respect. Treating people with dignity. Making sure that everyone has an even chance."
On the Republican side, President Donald Trump has emphasized a Biden victory would usher in "a radical Left agenda" that will "hurt the Bible" and "hurt God," adding a Democrat victory would mean socialism and lawlessness, as well as the erasure of national monuments and symbols.
Along with the heavy partisan feeling, a plurality of voters said they would accept an unambiguous election result.
The poll, which was conducted among 1,200 registered voters, has a margin of error of 3.8%.
