Need to Get a Divorce and Get Away From It All? Try This Hotel

Planning to get a divorce, but you'd like to celebrate it in high, romantic style, and maybe even on television?

The very posh, very romantic Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs, NY, has signed on with a Netherlands group to provide the ultimate weekend divorce experience, the New York Post reports.

In the 75 years since the Gideon Putnam Resort opened in 1937, the luxurious hotel and spa has been the site of "thousands" of weddings, Rob Sgarlata, director of sales and marketing, told Newsmax.

When "Divorce Hotel," a business in the Netherlands approached Gideon Putnam, Sgarlata said, "They were looking for a place where they could minimize the level of stress. We operate a world class spa which is famous for relaxation and rejuvenation on a physical, mental and spiritual level."

It costs less to get divorced than to revel in one of the resort's deluxe weddings, or about $5,000 compared to the average wedding package cost of $10,000, Sgarlata told Newsmax. In the Netherlands, the breakup package costs about $4,150.

Two weeks ago, "Divorce Hotel" founder and CEO Jim Halfens reached out to Gideon Putnam and the hotel agreed to host the program.

In a typical divorce weekend, couples will check into separate rooms and work with a mediator to finalize all the details, which are then presented to a judge to put the official stamp of approval on the divorce.

"Practically, they are divorced after signing on Sunday," Halfens told the Post. "After signing, all work is done and we sent it to a judge who only puts a stamp on it to make it official."

"Divorce Hotel" opened in Holland in 2011, working with six hotels in the Netherlands that offer the service only to residents of the Netherlands. This is the company's first move into the US, CNN reports. In Holland, nearly 100 couples have used "Divorce Hotel" to facilitate their split-ups.

Dutch couples work with a mediator, attorneys, real estate agents, notaries and valuation experts to finalize their divorce agreement.

"Everybody who goes into the hotel has a 100% success guarantee that they will be divorced on Sunday," Halfens told CNN, noting that he has plans to feature the program on a reality television show.

Between negotiation meetings, couples can enjoy the hotel facilities, relax, and get ready for the next slugfest over who gets to keep the sofa, while their rooms are located a safe distance apart, to cut down on guest-disturbing arguments.

“We would be sensitive to having them in different parts of the hotel,” Sgarlata told the Post.
