Fifty-eight percent of registered voters fear that lifting restrictions on public behavior too soon will lead to an increase in coronavirus cases and deaths, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released on Sunday.

Only 33% said they were concerned that the restrictions would last for too long, while 3% said they were worried about both possibilites.

Other results from the survey showed:

  • While 77% of Democrats and 57% of independents are more concerned about the coronavirus, only 39% of Republicans share that view.
  • Forty-eight percent of GOP supporters are more worried about the economic ramifications of adhering too long to the restrictions.
  • When asked if they knew of someone personally who has contracted the coronavirus, 40% said yes, compared to 27% who answered the same in a poll earlier this month.
  • Thirty-three percent of those surveyed said they were "very worried" that a family member would come down with the coronavirus, with an additional 40% saying  they were "somewhat worried."
  • Those figures are up considerably from a poll released a month ago, when the numbers showed 15% and 38%, respectively.
  • Only 3% said the coronavirus pandemic had no impact on their lives, while 77% said it had affected them either in "a very major way" or "a fairly major way."

The survey was conducted among 900 registered voters by Hart Research Associates/Public Opinion Strategies between April 13-15.  It has a margin of error of +/- 3.27%.
