Sports broadcaster Bob Costas is doubling down on his comments on gun control, saying that he is challenging those who disagree to a bet.
"Let's say over the next five years, we'll do a Google search, we'll have an independent party monitor it," Costas told Seth Meyers on NBC's "Late Night" early Thursday. "You keep track how many good and constructive things are associated with athletes having a gun, and I'll keep track of all the tragedies and criminality and folly. And let's see who comes out ahead or behind, as the case may be."

The sports commentator attacked the gun culture in late
2012 after Kansas City Chiefs Javon Belcher killed his girlfriend in a domestic violence situation, saying that guns turn domestic disputes and otherwise minor altercations deadly. His comments sparked
outrage by those who support gun rights.
Costas said he disagrees with those who say that political hot buttons have no place in sports commentary, saying that both the gun issue and issues like the name of the Washington Redskins football team are both relevant to current events in sports.
The sports broadcaster is on record saying that he thinks the Redskins should
change their name to something that isn't offensive to Native Americans.
"I'm not talking about Syria or the national debt, I'm talking about whatever may occasionally come up that is directly connected to sports," he explained. "How the name of the Washington Redskins isn't a football issue, I have no idea."
