What's in a Name? Site Says Names Show How Voters Lean

By    |   Thursday, 27 February 2014 02:59 PM EST

Consultants at a Washington campaign firm say they've developed a tool to see if a voter's name indicates whether they lean left or right.

Clarity Campaign says its online tool accesses "the power of the voter file and the latest in Democratic campaign analytics" to create the program, reports Business Insider.

When users plug a first or last name into the site, it provides a chart that shows how many registered voters share that name and what percentage belongs to each major political party.

The charts also provide information about voters likely to own guns, attend church weekly, or have a college degree.

The site reveals some interesting facts. For example, nationally, 31 registered voters are named "Barack," and most of them own a gun.

Also, most people who have the last name "Nixon" are Democrats, while one-third of the people with the name "Kennedy" identify as Republicans. An additional 66.5 percent of the Kennedys are Democrats, as would be expected, but one identified himself as a "Republitarian," presumably a cross between a Republican and a Libertarian.

Four of the five most popular boys' names, as determined by the Social Security Administration, lean Republican, while four of the five most popular girls' names lean Democrat.
