Bid to Build Obama Library in Chicago Clears Crucial Hurdle

Monday, 09 Mar 2015 04:22 PM

The plan to give Chicago control over two pieces of park land on the city's South Side so that Barack Obama can choose one as the site for his presidential library has taken a big step forward.

The widely expected unanimous approval by Chicago's plan commission on Monday sends the plan to a joint City Council committee on Wednesday. That committee and the full council are expected to approve the plan.

The plan keeps alive the bid by the University of Chicago that depends 20 acres of either Jackson Park or Washington Park.

The bid is one of four the president and the first lady are considering. Others competing for the library are the University of Illinois at Chicago, Columbia University in New York and the University of Hawaii.
