The National Cancer Institute has designated New York University’s Langone Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center a “Comprehensive Cancer Center,” the highest ranking awarded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The announcement this past week by the NCI means the Perlmutter Cancer Center joins the top 50 comprehensive cancer centers across the United States.

NCI gives the award to ranking cancer centers that have shown commitment to laboratory research, clinical trials, education and training, community and outreach and the development of more effective approaches to cancer prevention, treatment and diagnosis.

The Perlmutters are long-time friends of President Trump and his wife, Melania. Isaac ‘Ike’ Perlmutter is the CEO of Marvel, and the Forbes 400 list notes his net worth at $4.4 billion.

Perlmutter and his wife, Laurie, have donated over $50 million to the Cancer Center at NYU’s Langone.

NYU’s Cancer Center also received an overall “outstanding” rating on the competitive renewal of its Cancer Center Support Grant, meaning it will receive a little over $2.35 million in new funding each year, or $20 million for its five-year grant, resulting in a 51 percent increase from its last grant, per The Cancer Letter.

“Over the past several years, NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center has renewed and expanded its commitment to advancing cancer care and, in doing so, has achieved many important milestones, including strengthening our faculty, broadening our research portfolio, particularly in clinical and translational research, and improving patient care and quality standards,” said Perlmutter Cancer Center Director Benjamin G. Neel in a press release concerning.

“We are proud of what we have accomplished and gratified that our efforts have been rewarded with our elevation to NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center status.”
