A petition to swap out a Confederate statue with one of actor Chadwick Boseman in Anderson, South Carolina, has garnered more than 7,500 signatures.
Boseman, who died on Friday after a four-year battle with colon cancer, was born in Anderson. The 43-year-old was known for leading roles in “42,” “Black Panther” and “Get On Up.”
The Confederate monument is currently displayed outside of a courthouse in Anderson.
“Mr. Boseman is without question an American treasure and his accolades go on and on. It is only fitting that his work is honored in the same place that birthed him,” the petition states, adding: “As fellow citizens go about their day they should have a face that sees all people as equal. That sees all citizens regardless of outward appearance as a member of the Anderson community.”
The petition says the Confederate Monument “belongs in a museum and has no right to be displayed there” and says Boseman “opened many doors for many young black people with his leading roles.”
