The world's largest Facebook page for atheists worries the social media giant is playing God by repeatedly taking down its posts.
"I'm simply in tears. Every single day, we have helped numerous atheists," Allie Jackson, CEO of Atheist Republic, told Ultra News. "Without proper reason, without care, they remove us — they have cut off our reach to the community we've spent years growing."
Jackson said administrators of Atheist Republic routinely see their posts removed "because people have harassed us over content they didn't like."
Ultra News says pro-religion forces who oppose the page, which has more than 1.6 million likes, "appear to be reporting it so that it will be automatically taken down — leaving it invisible and unable to post."
The Independent reports that when a questionable post is flagged, it triggers an automated process on Facebook that forced the page to be "unpublished." That means it disappears until the Facebook decides to reinstate it.
The atheists have asked Facebook to alter its algorithms to make it harder for those opposing it to have pages removed. Facebook has a process for appealing banished pages.
The group describes itself as a Vancouver, British Columbia- based non-profit whose members are "atheists and proud of it. We will not apologize for what we do and don't believe. We will not rename ourselves to hide from hatred. And we will not stay isolated in fear of being demonized when united."
