Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), on Monday described the results of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine trials “extraordinary,” in an interview with The Washington Post.
Pfizer announced on Monday that their coronavirus vaccine trials have seen about a 90% success rate, though this data has yet to be published or peer-reviewed, according to the Post.
“The results are really quite good, I mean extraordinary,” Fauci said, noting that he has yet to review the data itself, but has spoken to Pfizer’s chief executive, Albert Bourla.
Fauci noted that the vaccine the National Institutes of Health and the biotech company Moderna are currently working together on utilizes similar technology, “which gives you hope we might even have two vaccines.”
“I would say it’s a historical moment. Something like this has never happened before. First of all, the world was faced with such a terrible situation, the pandemic, and being able in such a short time to go through what usually takes many years,” added Kathrin Jansen, Pfizer’s head of vaccine research and development. “Hearing that at the interim analysis we are over 90 percent effective — it was almost stunning to hear.”
