Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN on Monday that Pfizer’s announcement about its coronavirus vaccine is a good sign for others in development.
Pfizer announced on Monday that its COVID-19 vaccine, which uses a new technology known as messenger RNA, has been highly effective in early trials.
“This shows that the mRNA platform actually does work,” Fauci said in an interview with CNN. “And there’s another vaccine candidate, Moderna, that’s using the same platform.”
The National Institutes of Health have been working with Moderna and several other vaccine makers to test their products, with four vaccines for the coronavirus currently in the final trial phase.
“An answer depends on the size of the trial and how many infections there are in the community,” Fauci said, noting that Pfizer’s success is due to the size and scale of the ongoing pandemic.
“This was a trial that was geared to 44,000 people and we are in the middle of a major surge right now,” he added. “Those two things together make it much more likely that you’ll get an answer quickly, which is what happened. We got an answer quickly.”
