Amazon seized roughly half of online sales on Black Friday with its promotions resulting in an "eye-popping" performance among retailers vying for holiday shopping dollars, according to GBH Insight, Business Insider reported Friday.
GBH, a marketing research and consulting firm, said Amazon took between 45 and 50 percent of all online sales on Black Friday, representing an estimated $1 billion in revenue during a 24-hour period.
Analysts predict the trend will continue throughout the holiday season, as Amazon competes against Wal-Mart, which has focused heavily this year on online sales. Wal-Mart had employed an "ambitious" online marketing effort for the holiday season, the article explained, though many shoppers reported the retail giant sold out quickly for many advertised items.
The growth in Amazon Prime subscribers positioned the company to succeed in boosting holiday sales, the report maintained.
