A private memorial service to remember and honor George Floyd, scheduled to take place in Minneapolis Thursday afternoon, is expected to draw a large crowd, Fox News reports.

The private service will be attended by Floyd's family and friends as well as the Rev. Al Sharpton and the mother of Eric Garner.

Sharpton will deliver the eulogy. He told the New York Times he plans to announce a new social movement at the memorial service and demand federal law be enacted to stop racial injustice by police departments.

Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis. His death has led to ongoing protests across the country calling for an end to police brutality.

North Central University said social distancing measures are expected to be put in place for attendees.

“It just feels like I’m coming to my son’s funeral again,” Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, told the New York Times on Wednesday. “This young man was crying for his mother at the end. That was like my son echoing from the grave saying, ‘Mama, you’ve got to do something. They’re still killing us.’”

Garner, an unarmed black man, died in 2014 in New York after he was placed in a chokehold by a police officer. He also was recorded saying “I can’t breathe,” which was among the final words Floyd spoke before he died. Floyd was pinned down to ground by a police officer’s knee on his neck.

Garner’s family had to fight for five years before the officer was removed from the force. He never faced federal charges. The officer in the Floyd case was fired and faces second-degree murder charges.

A second memorial service in North Carolina, where Floyd was born, is scheduled to take place on Saturday. Former Vice President Joe Biden is expected to attend Floyd's funeral in Houston scheduled for Tuesday at The Fountain of Praise, KABC-TV reported.
