Clothing retailer Zara has pulled a skirt from sale that featured Pepe the Frog-like graphics similar to the image declared as a racist and anti-Semitic hate symbol last year.
Twitter user Megan Fredette pointed out the skirt on Monday and wondered if Zara was aware of the frog’s significance.
The tweet got more than 350 replies, the majority of which were frog memes or some variation of “what’s the big deal?”
Although many commenters didn’t see the big deal about using the frog on the skirt (which wasn’t officially Pepe, but just looked like him), Zara pulled the skirt from its website as a result of the original tweet, according to Yahoo Style.
The Anti-Defamation League declared Pepe the Frog a hate symbol in September because of its recent use in Nazi and racist memes. The ADL did admit most instances of Pepe memes have been nonbigoted, but said a “subset of Pepe memes” were centered around hateful themes.
The skirt’s designer, Mario de Santiago, said the idea came from a painting drawn with friends several years ago and has nothing to do with Pepe.
“There is absolutely no link to the suggested theme,” he said, The Guardian reported.
The cartoonist Matt Furie who created Pepe also has said there was never any intention of the frog having certain political views and is trying to reclaim Pepe after he was co-opted for political messages.
