Zach Miller, Chicago Bears tight end, had surgery to repair a torn artery in his leg after dislocating his knee during Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans.
Miller will remain in the hospital in New Orleans after the surgery, which NFL and team sources told ESPN on Monday was to save his leg. It was not immediately clear how high the risk of amputation had been prior to surgery to repair a torn popliteal artery.
Surgeons had to graft tissue from his other leg to repair the artery, ESPN reported. Miller injured his leg during an over-the-shoulder catch from Mitchell Trubisky in the end zone, landing on his left leg and causing it to bend awkwardly.
The catch was initially ruled a touchdown but was overturned after review when officials said Miller had not maintained possession of the ball, NFL.com reported. The Bears later lost the game 20-12.
Bears medical staff will stay with Miller as he is further evaluated, NFL.com reported.
In a statement updating Miller's condition, the team offered thoughts and support to Miller and his family.
"We are thinking of Zach and his family and support from our entire organization goes out to them," the team said, according to NFL.com.
Many Twitter users offered prayers and well wishes for Miller.
