Half of the traffic to YouTube comes from mobile devices, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki told attendees of a Code/Mobile conference.
"Mobile is super important. I think it’s important for every business right now,”
Wojcicki said, according to ReelSEO.
YouTube, which has an app available via Google Play and Apple's App Store, is experiencing a 50 percent increase in watch time each year, ReelSEO reported.
YouTube also is considering whether to offer paid subscriptions, free of advertising.
"YouTube right now is ad-supported, which is great because it has enabled us to scale to a billion users," Wojcicki said. "But there's going to be a point where people don't want to see the ads."
Mobile use has contributed to downward pressure on advertising rates, CBS reported. Offering a subscription option may be one solution for the company, which is looking for ways to boost revenue.
According to CNET, YouTube also has been working on a streaming music service similar to Spotify that could launch soon.
Twitter users weren’t surprised by the news that half of YouTube's traffic comes from mobile devices.
