The competition to be named the World's Ugliest Dog begins Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California.

Chinese cresteds, chihuahuas, and mutts are the usual participants in the Petaluma competition, and many of them are rescue dogs, CNN reported. Both appearance and personality are considered in the contest criteria.

Most of the dogs have hair sticking out or are bald in spots, and many have a distinctive waddle from a shortened spine or other unusual development, CNN said. Previous winners had names such as Yoda, Quasi Modo, and Rascal Duex.

Many of the dogs persevered through adversity including injuries, health challenges, or even abuse and neglect by a previous owner.

“We’re proud to celebrate all dogs and pets by showing that no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable, and a great edition to any family,” Sonoma-Marin Fair CEO Erin Post said, SFGate reported.

The ugliest dog competition winner will fly with its owner to New York to celebrate the victory.

Twitter users in Petaluma were proud to post about attending the show.

Although a few thought it was sad to call any dog ugly.
