Woody Allen may be taking his first career break in decades, but whether it is because the veteran director needs some time off or because he has been unable to secure financing for his next project is uncertain, The Guardian reported this week.
Since 1974, Allen has released at least one movie a year, but beyond the release of his 48th feature film "A Rainy Day in Ney York," which will be released by Amazon this year, his next project is slated for 2020.
IMDb lists the film, reportedly in pre-production, as an "Untitled Woody Allen Project."
No movie release has been scheduled for 2019, giving the 82-year-old a break in his busy schedule, but a source told Page Six this is because Allen has been battling to secure financing for his 2020 project.
"Woody loves working. He never takes a vacation. But he will be taking time off this year until he can find a backer," the source said.
This is reportedly not a new issue facing Allen.
"His movies don't make money," a source told Page Six. "For years, he's been going from one financier to another. He even went to Europe. But he's run out of options."
Allen's career suffered a blow amid allegations that he had sexually abused his step-daughter, Dylan Farrow, 26 years ago.
He was never formally charged and he rebounded from the accusations, until the #MeToo movement again threatened his reputation.
"Woody always got great actors. Stars would work for scale because it gave them prestige, but with the #MeToo movement, he's toxic," one Hollywood producer told Page Six.
A spokesperson for Allen has denied the claims about financial troubles.
