A woman who fell overboard a cruise ship near the Bahamas was saved in a dramatic rescue performed in the darkness by crew members on Tuesday.
The incident was witnessed by one passenger, Kareen Kennedy, who was eating dinner in the fifth-deck main dining room onboard the Norwegian Epic cruise ship when an emergency code was announced over the intercom, USA Today noted.
Upon querying what was going on, Kennedy's server said someone had "jumped off the ship."
Kennedy said she saw two rescue boats dispatched from the ship to patrol the waves with search lights and shortly after, the captain announced that one of the passengers had been rescued.
Norwegian Cruise Lines confirmed the incident to ABC News, stating that as soon as a report was made that a guest had fallen overboard, the cruise ship "maneuvered to allow the crew to begin a search."
After the unidentified woman was recovered, she was taken to the onboard medical facility for evaluation.
The cruise liner released a statement applauding its staff for reacting so quickly in the emergency and for rescuing the woman.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest and their family as they embark on the recovery process," the statement said, per WESH.
The woman is said to be in stable condition and making a full recovery.
It is unclear what caused the fall, but several witnesses told ABC News that the woman, who appeared to be intoxicated, had been taking a photo before she went overboard.
