Purportedly the oldest woman to ever give birth, Mangayamma Yaramati, a 74-year-old from southern India, delivered twin girls Thursday, according to USA Today, citing local media reports.
"Both mother and the infants are healthy and have no complications whatsoever," Guntur's Ahalya Hospital Director Dr. Sankayyala Uma Shankar told the Hindustan Times.
Conflicting reports have Yaramati's age as 73 or 74, but Shankar told The Washington Post her birth certificate reflected 74.
After years of being unable to conceive, the first-time mother opted for in vitro fertilization – debated by doctors for its ethics of a mother that age carrying full term. She had her twins via cesarean section and remained in intensive care to "to come out of the stress," doctors reportedly said.
"We are the happiest couple on Earth today," her husband, Sitarama Rajarao told the Times of India. "We have our own children."
