Wisconsin firefighters saved a kitten overcome in a house fire by using an oxygen mask made specifically for animals. The cat named Fluffy can now continue using the rest of its nine lives.
A video of the firefighters applying the mask on the cat along with a picture was posted on the Fond du Lac fire department's Facebook page.
"Cat rescued and received oxygen by paramedics who have specially designed masks to provide oxygen to pets," said the caption on the City of Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue Facebook page, which has since gone viral.
The Fond du Lac Reporter said Invisible Fence Brand helped provide fire departments with the animal-specific masks for just such situations.
"Although the U.S. Fire Administration doesn't keep an official statistic, industry sources estimate 40,000 to 150,000 pets die each year in fires," the Invisible Fence website said. "Most succumb to smoke inhalation. In most states, emergency responders lack the equipment to resuscitate and save pets."
The company said its donation program provides fire stations with kits that include small, medium, and large masks.
"So far, the program has saved an estimated 10,000 pets from fires and smoke inhalation," the website said.
News of the oxygen-aided kitten rescue spread on Twitter, too.
