Winter Storm Niko is expected to dump heavy snow on the Northeast starting Wednesday night and continuing through Thursday, effecting large metropolitan areas like New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Forecasters warned that travelers should expect flight delays Thursday and a difficult commute along the Interstate 95 corridor, which will see its first significant snowfall since early January, The Weather Channel noted.
Meteorologists are predicting eight to 12 inches of snow for the Boston area, and five to eight inches for New York City, Philadelphia, and Providence. Baltimore could get up to three inches.
The falling temperatures and snow in the Northeast are coming after a period where the area experienced near record-highs for the season, the Daily Mail reported. For example, the National Weather Service predicted 60 degrees for New York City's Central Park Wednesday, one degree off its record high for the day.
AccuWeather predicted that temperatures will tumble by 15 to 30 degrees from the Midwest to the interior South and northeastern Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
Snow has been a rare sight in the Northeast this winter season, according to the Daily Mail, which added that it has not snowed in Central Park since Jan. 15, and Boston has only recorded 1.4 inches of snow since Jan. 8.
"It looks like the cold air will come in fast enough and the storm will strengthen enough to produce a swath of heavy, wet and accumulating snow from the mountains of northern Virginia and West Virginia to much of New England," AccuWeather meteorologist Mike Doll said.
Along with the Interstate 95 corridor, the heavy snow is expected to affect travel along other freeways in the Northeast, including Interstate 68, Interstate 70, Interstate 76, Interstate 78, Interstate 80, Interstate 81, Interstate 83, and Interstate 84, AccuWeather reported.
The Weather Channel said winds will intensify along the northeast coast with gusts over 50 miles per hour on Thursday, which could result in downed tree limbs and wires. Flight delays will be likely in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, New York City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Boston and Hartford.
