New hardware and features for the Windows Phone are off the table as the company said Sunday it will now provide only bug fixes and security updates.
Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Operating Systems Joe Belfiore made the announcement on Twitter that new hardware and features for Windows 10 Mobile will no longer be happening.
“Of course we’ll continue to support the platform,” Belfiore wrote. “But building new features/[hardware] aren’t the focus.”
Belfiore also said he isn't using a Windows Phone anymore because of the “app/hw diversity.”
The relatively low volume of users meant that the platform couldn’t get app developers to make apps for it, Belfiore went on.
Windows phones represent less than 1 percent of the smartphone market as of 2016, PCMag reported, and Microsoft cut nearly 2,000 jobs from the hardware section of the smartphone last May.
Instead of putting more effort into a failing platform, Microsoft is now looking to ramp up its presence on iOS and Android, including bringing its Edge browser to those devices, PCMag reported.
Twitter users shared their disappointment, although most seemed to expect the news.
