Windows 9 Likely to Be Free Along With Next 8.1 Major Update

Windows 9, as well as the next major update to Windows 8.1, will likely be given out for free by Microsoft.

It's long been speculated by technology experts that Microsoft will at some point take a cue from its competitor, Apple, and offer its Windows operating system at a deep discount or entirely free. According to BGR.com, Russian hacker group WZOR now claims to have an insider track on this development, and confirms that these tectonic shifts in price are in fact being considered by executives.

Windows 8.1 Update 2 is expected in August or September, and Windows 9 is expected in April 2015, according to The Motley Fool.

Along with the new price consideration – which executives have reportedly not finalized – the hacker group also released details about the upcoming Windows 9 redesign.

Users of Windows 9 Enterprise edition will likely have the ability to disable the new Metro 2.0 interface, which some have taken to with glee, while others have likened its tiled interface to digital carnival barkers.

Unlike some previous versions of the operating system, internal security at Microsoft is expected to be airtight, and the company plans to completely quash the possibility of the systems leaking to the public. Many past leaks have emerged from the Microsoft China offices, and the company is paying particular attention to security there.

Upon launch, The Motley Fool notes a big challenge the new systems will encounter in the market: many Windows users are stuck on Windows 7, think it's "good enough," and aren't too keen to hop aboard a new system. Perhaps the new price tags will help – especially if they say "free."
