Microsoft has announced Windows 10 will be released over the summer and, according to website TechCrunch, free upgrades will likely be offered to many users.

Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president of operating systems, made the announcement on his blog Tuesday.

"We continue to make great development progress and shared today that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages," said Myerson. "Windows has always been global with more than 1.5 billion users around the world and here in China hundreds of millions of PCs operate Windows today."

Myerson wrote that Windows will introduce the Qualcomm DragonBoard 410C, which will integrate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS and a smartphone-class Snapdragon 410 chipset.

"Windows 10 is the only platform that supports innovation across such a broad family of hardware and we are committed to investing in the success of our partners and supporting their development activities," noted Myerson.

Tech Crunch's Jon Russell wrote that while the new information about Windows 10 is welcomed for Microsoft users, an actual release date for the new platform would have been even better.

"Frustratingly, though, the company isn't dishing an actual launch date for its hotly-anticipated new platform, but an interesting new nugget of information was let out today," said Russell. "The company previously voiced its intention to offer free upgrades to 'millions' of customers on Windows 7 or earlier, and China – a market synonymous with piracy – is a key focus of that initiative."

Ed Bott of ZDNet.com said the cloudy release date actually left more questions than answers for him.

"In the Northern Hemisphere, summer ends on September 21 … (giving) Microsoft only six months to complete development of Windows 10 and deliver it as a free upgrade to hundreds of millions of customers worldwide. That's an ambitious schedule, given that current preview releases are still missing key features such as the new Spartan browser and the just-announced Windows Hello and Microsoft biometric framework."
