William Shatner lambasted entertainment journalists on Twitter after they interpreted one of his posts as confirmation that he would be returning to the starship Enterprise for Roberto Orci's "Star Trek 3."
According to Vulture, a blog claimed Tuesday that both Shatner and Leonard Nimoy would play future versions of Kirk and Spock, who interact with Chris Pine’s Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Spock.
Unintentionally adding fuel to the fire, Shatner tweeted this morning "I'm baaaaccckk!!!" which a number of fan blogs interpreted as confirmation that Shatner was indeed slated to appear in "Star Trek 3."
Shatner quickly deleted the tweet, and went on to accuse the bloggers of practicing "yellow journalism" and saying "You create an entire fictional story around a 2 word tweet and all you have to say is I'm sorry?"
He went on to wonder aloud how crazy it was that a single vague tweet could set off a news cycle.
He later pinned an old tweet to the top of his Twitter timeline, re-confirming that his connection to ST3 is all just rumor and speculation.
A few days after issuing his September 23 tweet saying that "nobody has contacted me," however, a fan video showed him at the Wizard-World Nashville ComicCon saying that director JJ Abrams had in fact contacted him about doing the movie, to which he said it depends on what you do with the character — I’d be delighted."
That said, who knows, Trekkies. Who knows.
