Video footage of the suspect in Tom Brady’s jersey theft was released Monday, showing the man who allegedly left the New England Patriots’ locker room with Brady’s Super Bowl 51 jersey.
The NFL and FBI had been working together to find Brady’s stolen jersey, which went missing after the Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons last month in what was an action-packed Super Bowl title game in Houston, according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.
The video shows the suspect carrying a backpack and entering the Patriots’ locker room right behind Coach Bill Belichick after the game, Larry Brown Sports noted.
The suspect was seen in the video exiting the locker room shortly after, but this time he had more than just a backpack in his possession. The footage shows the suspect with something extra tucked under his left arm.
According to TMZ, the suspect has been identified as Mauricio Ortega, a former executive at Diario La Prensa, a Mexican news organization.
"Authorities were unable to confirm if Ortega is a suspect, as the investigation remains ongoing," Larry Brown Sports reported.
La Prensa said Ortega stepped down from his position on March 14, citing " difficulties related to the health of a family member," according to Larry Brown Sports.
“With complete surprise and disappointment, today we have received the news of the alleged behavior by Martin Mauricio Ortega Camberos on Feb. 5, 2017, inside NRG Stadium in Houston Texas, where Super Bowl LI took place,” La Pensa said in a statement.
“Editora La Prensa S.A. de C.V., if these allegations are true, strongly rejects the behavior of Martin Mauricio Ortega Camberos, who took advantage of the position he held, used the newspaper La Prensa to obtain media credentials to access the field of play, press conferences and probably other areas of NRG Stadium,” the statement continued.
